Making a Good Impression
Cynical Sam, HR.com
Interview books always give the same tired advice about making a good impression with a nice outfit and a firm handshake. Nothing wrong with that I suppose but remember the interview is not about you, it’s about the interviewer. Here’s what works for me:
Me: “Hello, nice to meet you I’m Sam”
Interviewer: “I’m Alice Smith”
Me: “Alice Smith? The Alice Smith? Oh, I’ve heard so much about you. You’re well known in the industry. You’ve got a great reputation! I’m delighted to meet you. Tell me what you’ve been working on recently.”
With any luck the positive first impression this generates will cover for your lack of skills, accomplishments and knowledge.
